What is ACT?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is an empirically based psychological intervention based on the philosophy of Functional Contextualism and Relation Frame Theory. ACT uses three foundational pillars of openness, awareness and active engagement and emphasises the observance of thoughts and feelings as they are. The aim is to flexibly realign your life to resonate with your values, and find workable strategies to reorient your energies for longer term success. In ACT we work with our very human experiences of pain as in inevitable part of a rich and meaningful life. ACT recognises that struggling to avoid inescapable pain (both psychological and physical), causes more pain.   Language can entangle us and trap our thoughts, feelings and behaviours, leading to inflexibility and being stuck. We can collaborate to change this relationship, with the use of empathic listening, experimental exercises and metaphor creativity as a guide to our therapeutic work.  ACT has proven success across the domains of psychological and physical health, sports performance, leadership and justice and equity (Hayes, Steven.C. 2025).
